Fundraising Update: November 29th, 2022

Dear Friends,

Thank you for your generous past support of Ontario School Safety. Because you care, we are closer to being able to bring forward a court challenge to protect all Ontario schoolchildren.

This includes children like Leah* who has overcome a life-altering transplant. For Leah, a school accommodation for medical reasons means physical safety and peace of mind.

Because of the lack of institutional recognition of the risk of COVID-19 and the failure to protect against it in schools, Leah’s medical accommodation was not only denied, she was threatened with expulsion if she missed too many consecutive days of school.

She continues to be exposed to symptomatic children in the classroom, despite her high risk for severe outcomes. This has caused an incredible amount of anxiety to a child who has already been through so much.

It doesn’t have to be this way.

Ontario school children deserve scientific, evidence-based protections in their classrooms.

We believe that all children deserve access to a safe, in-person learning experience, and this is why we’re fighting for scientific, evidence-based protections in the classroom.

But we can’t do it without your help. Even with a talented team of pro-bono lawyers working behind the scenes, a court challenge requires a large pool of funding. Not only do we need to be ready for a lengthy legal challenge, we need to anticipate every outcome.

A loss in court means you can be liable for the other party’s legal fees. We could not in good consciousness, expose our plaintiffs to this risk, which means we cannot file until we have enough funding for a challenge and to protect plaintiffs in the event of a loss.

Every gift we receive brings us closer to having our case tried in the courts. Please give today to help us build a safer future for all Ontario children.

Sincerely,

The Ontario School Safety Team
